In The Ghetto…

The 1400 block of 9th Street in West Oakland isn’t as bad as it used to be. This area was once one of the worst areas in Oakland but that was prior to the double decked freeway collapsing in The Loma Prieta 1989 Earthquake. Now with that hulking concrete monster gone, urban gentrification has taken hold of this area and things are getting better.

Millennials from San Francisco are moving out of high priced there and settling here. It will always be West Oakland with all night liquor stores and high crime rates. Would I want to walk on these streets at night, hardly. I’m just thankful I don’t have to live here. Between the sounds of screeching BART trains starting their descent under the San Francisco Bay and the constant drone of traffic on 880 a stone’s throw away, that would drive me crazier than I am already. This too will pass

  1. I lived in Oakland years ago. Behind the Grand Lake theatre. Loved it. Loma Prieta quake was horrifying. Lived in SF then. Sat and prayed with neighbors waiting to hear if their loved ones survived the Bay Bridge collapse. Everyone was very helpful. Strong sense of community coming together for one another.

  2. Born and raised in the city. The 89 quake was a unifying time for our community. Even though it was a tragedy it was a natural disaster. Brought us together. Also your A’s beat us lol. West Oakland I hardly visited growing up. East Oakland is where some of my family stayed. Great article nonetheless
