The Old Man and The Police…

Mr. Monks had no clue how he had ended up at The Firewood Temple, he only knew he needed to get his license back. Stored in what was left of his functioning brain was the fact he had lost his license, not of how or why but only that he had lost it. I can see how with his dementia and his total loss of hearing, those two factors made him an unsafe driver. Maybe that’s why the California Department of Motor Vehicles revoked his license last year.

The officers had dealt with Mr. Monks recently when he was spotted walking down narrow Highway 12 a few weeks ago by worried motorists. If Mr. Monks hadn’t been walking on the solid yellow divide they might not have stopped.

So when it was all said and done, Mr. Monks did make it home, though in the back of a Sonoma Sheriff’s SUV. His broken down Audi A4 was towed off the property and all ended well. I must say, Mr. Monks was lucky someone showed up and found him. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard of people with dementia being found dead from exposure. This too will pass

  1. But with dementia, he would not have known he was dying, right? Maybe that’s not a ‘bad’ way to go, not knowing what is happening. Or perhaps it is one of the worst, being conscious that I don’t know what is happening. Pure hell.
